Profile: These slender, hand-painted mahjong point sticks or “tenbou” are carved from bone and were used for keeping score and as the game’s currency in place of cash, coins or chips. During the 1920’s, the game had a surge in popularity and cow bones were collected for production to satisfy the demand (later sets were typically made in plastic). When pulled from the game table, these pieces seem to have an added dimension beyond currency. Each set is unique, and each individual piece has a patina from its passage through hands.
